Sony BMG announced today that Emily Williams has signed a recording contract with them. From what I understand, immediately after Australian Idol finished Sony had all but said they were not interested in a contract with the runner up. Maybe after the lack-lustre record sales of Kate DeAraugo, they’ve realised that maybe the wrong person won the competition again and are now hot on the heals of the rightful winner.

Sony has a bit of an earth-mover mentality when it comes to this sort of thing. I think they just recruit everyone they think is worth a few TV ads and a couple of 10c CDs. The good thing about idol rejects is they come pre-advertised :)
What I’m surprised about, is that one of the other labels didn’t snatch her the day after Australian Idol ended. I wonder if there is something in the contracts that Australian Idol contestants sign, that says that if Sony BMG are interested within a predefined timeframe – that they have exclusive rights to that artist? Its quite clear why Sony BMG didn’t, they are meant to only give the winner a contract, so for them to dish out two contracts immediately, removes some of the ‘competiton’ from the show.

They may well have given themselves some time to ruminate in the contract though. I would have.

After Australian Idol 3 finished Emily was told by Sony BMG “We’re not going to let anybody else sign you.” So Emily knew she was going to be signed pretty much since the competition ended. Whether she was prohibited from divulging this information or she simply didn’t want to is still a mystery to me.
Also the rumours about Emily not being signed because she is too similar to Paulini are just that – RUMOURS!
I love Emily and I can’t believe she didn’t win (I voted 70 times), so I am so releived and elated that she is working on a new album and single due for release early this year!

Fantastic news! It’s what we have all been crying out for, a recording contract….yeeeaaah!! I can’t wait for her first release, Emily IMO was by far the best performer ever after watching all 3 series of Australian Idol.

When Emily and Kate were going to the grand finale, i was stoked. simply because the opera house had two awesome singers up there representing some of Australia’s versatility and individuality.
I had always liked the two, and i felt proud to see them up there. By the grand finale, it hadn’t mattered to me who would win …. they were both winners by that time.
I’m glad that Kate’s singing … and now … I’m glad that Emily’s got a contract, because i was beginning to wonder if she decided to go back to her forklift job ….. that woulda been devastating.

I am so thrilled as Emily is all heart & uses it all when she sings. I was devastated when she didn’t win as I just felt she was really a great talent. She will be around for along time. Can’t wait to buy her CD. Fabulous talent & a beautiful woman to boot. You Rock Emily.
I am so glad to her that we will be listening to Emily’s voice soon. Since Idol, she has been greatly missed. Yes, Kate does have a good voice, but there is no comparison to Emily. She sings with plenty of emotion which shows to the audience. She seems like a beautiful person and I can’t wait to hear her sing again. Especially if it was river deep mountain high. It seems that the person that actually wins idol is the one who has to work very hard with their singing. They deserve a record deal for their hard work and wouldn’t get it any other way. However… The natural talent always comes second. If you look at shannon noel, anthony callea and Emily, they will all do better than the winners of idol, because they have natural talent and are easily marketable. Emily has an unreal voice and should be able to soar with a career now due to her exposure on idol. Good luck to her.
I agree with what everyone has said. Kate was good, especially towards the end of the competion, however Emily was very consistent from day one, with her performance of ” Buses and trains”. Every week she captivated us, and delivered a great awesome performance. I do believe the wrong person won, but like someone said, they really should monitor the votes better, as with the younger crowd they are voting on superficial things rather than pure talent. I think perhaps allow the public to vote up to the grand final, then it should come down to the judges, as all 3 judges were shocked with the decision, and I believe they would have chosen Emily as the Idol. I do hope Emily will have the ride of her life to stardom, as she deserves every bit of it.
I haven’t bought any Australian Idol contestants music to date – what a surprise.
I will probably purchase Emily’s though as she has such a great voice & is a fantastic person.
You could see from day one Kate Deraugo or whatever her name is milking the Aussie Dag factor – then she transformed herself somewhat.

Emily was the winner in the talent stakes by far.
Anne & Roxy were also great, & deserved to go further than boring old Kate & some of the others in my opinion.

i am from switzerland and was over in australia last year 4 three months and was so amazed by emily. her voice is stunning!!!! i had tears in my eyes by listening…;)

Not all aussies are not racist, but I was in a lot of forums before Kate robbed Emily of the title and the talk was not so much the colour (well some were)it was that she is a resident and not an Australian citizen. I mean the girl has been living and working here for a couple of years….hell, she even pays taxes. The other backlash was that she was a mum and they don’t belong on idol. So Kate won, not because of her performances which were consistently average, there was just no comparison to Emily who was fantastic.
I’m still hanging out for that single, fingers crossed it will be sooner than later.
Sony, your so SLOW in picking up real talent. If I had my own record company I would’ve picked Emily up in a second. I wouldve realised Kate’s talent was limited and does not real International success. Performances through out Aus Idol have been okay from some of the talent, but Emily should have been signed, sealed d livered!! Yesterday. In comparison to Paulini? What ‘FOOL’had suggested this? 2 different ladies from different cultures. Paulini has a soft yet pleasing voice, whilst Emily has power and vocal ability to reach its true potential.These are 2 ladies from different cultures who have separate styles of singing, the only thing that makes them look similar is the colour of their skin. I noticed RNB and HIP HOP are something that Sony hardly ever back’s up? Wonder why?
I hope and if Emily hits the big time she’ll decide to go with a MORE openminded recording studio that is deserving of her, not decide that Kate isn’t making ther company sales and then decide we’ll approach Emily and USE her.

I am glad Emily has been signed, however I will not be rushing out to buy a cover of a Whitney Huston song !!!!!! Her first single should have been something new. What an uninspiring choice, but I suppose all the Idol fans will but it. Kates album is good and only has one cover which is good. And really Wasabi is the crappiest song in the charts. I assume it only got so high because of the B side.

Emily or Shannon Noll? , hmmmm. Definately EMILY, the problem with Australian music artists is that they all sound the same. They don’t have that raw talent. Emily can sing , what ever style or category. I wouldn’t bother buying Kate’s music because it doesn’t say anything, voice nor does her look or album have a market ability. As for Whitney Houston , I’d definately buy her album anyday. Why? Its the voice, not what they look like. That goes for Emily full stop. She should’ve been signed up yesterday from the ‘m-a-c-h-i-n-e-s’ at Sony. Wouldn’t trust them either. They’d spit you out sure’nuff if u don’t make them overall profit.

First of all Lee Harding is CRAP!!!!! Heard it all before!!!!!!! Anyone can sing punk rock if given the opportunity. He’ll be stale in no time. i’m so happy i actually got to meet her and have a little conversation with her at a shopping centre where she was signing CDs with Lee, Kate, and Dan a while ago. i’ll never forget it. she was the nicest one of the group, although Kate wasn’t so bad.
i think Sympathy played a major part in Kate winning Idol. everyone felt sorry for her when Kyle critecised her arms.

Gabi do u have a child, obviously NOT cause u don’t know the feeling. I am a mother of only 1 child and I know how it feels. The child becomes your life, I never knew how much it would change my life and the way I think. I’m the first to admit I brag about my child ALL the time as most parents do. It also makes you grow up heaps and realise what your parents had to go through. Secondly I know the ONLY reason Lee is so popular is cause he sings punk rock and most young teens love that sort of music. But believe me he wont make it Internationally – cause its just stale.
