A new article about Australian Idol 2006 finalists Damien Leith & Jessica Mauboy is now available.
Tonight saw the culmination of the third Australian Idol. For the last three months, contestants have been battling and belting out their biggest and brightest notes, in an attempt progress through the aggressive selection progress to make it to the grand final at the Sydney Opera House. What happened tonight, is sure to have gob smacked a vast portion of the Australian public. In some strange twist, Kate DeAraugo managed to out vote Emily Williams to win the grand final.
Kate’s performance throughout Australian Idol has been quite good, however compared to other singers – her overall package and skills were lacking. She has progressed through the weeks, by giving good performances and relying on other singers delivering an ok performance. As the competition crept towards the business end, her weaknesses were starting to show. Week after week, Mark would criticise her for not letting go of her voice, not connecting with the music, not transcending. Yet through all the criticism, the public continued to vote for her.
In stark contrast, Emily Williams has been delivering high grade performances week after week. She has received the ultimate ‘good job’ stamp (read: Touchdown!) from Mark no less than three times in the last few weeks. They suggest that she do something, next week she comes out and delivers it bigger and better than they could have imagined. Kyle went as far to say, that he hasn’t heard someone sing Whitney Huston, that isn’t Whitney Huston and make it worth listening too – yet he gives complements like that to Emily.
I have to believe that Kate DeAraugo has won Australian Idol, not through her ability to sing, nor her ability to perform – but in her Barbie Doll like appearance. No sane person could honestly believe that Kate was a superior singer to Emily, yet Kate stands in utter disbelief that she has won. The organisers of Australian Idol, need to some how factor in who is voting – not just the raw number of votes. Assigning the same importance to a 12 year olds vote as to an adults isn’t fair to the performers, they are just being cheated.
One can only hope that Emily Williams soars to the top, just like her amazing voice.

Kate won simply because she had her own political organisation exploiting the voting system for her. Was it Bendigo that she came from? I hope everyone realises that the locals in the town gathered their phone resources and built Kate’s numbers up artifically. They should be ashamed of themselves. The best singer lost because of stupid parochial back-slapping. It’s diminshed the whole show.

hi sapien. given that australia has 18 billion residents and bendigo has 86,068 (as indicated on bendigo city website)if you really think that the only reason she won is because she had a country town behind her you live in a small world. If you believe that the other winners didnt have the backing of their local communities with their fair share of voters coming from the suburbs, community groups and places they are known you are crazy. The previous 2 winners would have had access to more votes because they came from metro suburbs and therefore would have had access to more people for loyalty votes from groups they are known in as well as the adelaide vote and the sydney vote. I’m sure you’d agree that the advantage they had was stronger than a country town.
Emily had her fair share of support in her local area too. given that she came from a suburb of about 22kms out of brisbane, she would have had access to a large amount of community support. Its not like she came from a smaller country town.
In fact, i dont remember any one complaining when guy had access to the adelaide vote and shannon only had access to the Condobolin vote of just 4653.

Yes Kate won on the night, but be patient – when Emily’s first single hits the music store shelves she will prove herself beyond any Idol series win!. Kate worked hard getting herself to the point where Emily already “IS” – with little if any voice coaching or otherwise. I think the wait for Emily to come out will be well worth it – the only excuse that she has been behind the scenes for so long is that she must be getting the coaching required to push her amazing voice even further. I was at a night club where Emily sang not long after the Idol final and mate, she filled the place – Kate played at the same venue not long after, and didn’t go anywhere near the capacity crowd Emily attracted.
Personally I would like to see the true Divas of the idol series get together – Emily, Paulini, Anne, I’d even stick my neck out and say Casey once she gets her act together. Yes they are all of islander or aboriginal backgrounds – but as with all great singers, you’ve gotta have colour to truly be a diva.
I’d like to also say, get off the racial, taunts! and muck slinging … you’re really just pushing an agenda, but not helping the cause!

I come from Bendigo pop 96,000 so not as small as you might imagine. With Kates relitives working for channel 10 and Toyota, emily didn’t have a chance. Last year we we’re bombarded by posters, constantly in our faces telling us to vote for Kate DeAraugo all purchased by the ‘DeAraugo Institution’ I’m sure Emily couldn’t afford as much publicity even though she clearly could sing better.

I don’t know if anyone had seen the girls perform live on Dancing With The Stars. I must say they were good except for 2 things. When It came to each girl’s solo Kate almost lost her lines again! Through out the song (This Time I Know It’s For Real) She quickly turned to the others during the performance to ensure she was singing the right line!
Yet again when it came to Emily’s solo they turned her mike down. I think it’s slack Sony BMG have backed off from souly promoting Emily. Pretty Sad.

Hi emilyfanNT, yes its disapointing again to discredit such a wonderful singer. The girls Paulini, Emily and Riki sung very well. However Kate still sung in her dull drab tones trying to keep up the rhythm and try and hit the high notes with the rest of the girls.
Like she did on idol several times, nearly lost her que and lines and turned to the others ensuring she was singing the in tune and in time which really does show she doesn’t have the uniqueness in talent that the others did.
When Emily had her turn to perform solo its sad to say the sound technician turned the mike right down so you couldn’t her Emily hit those incredible notes.
Unfortunately I don’t know where you can download that particular night of the show but if you do get to watch it you’ll definately know there and then just how Kate almost stuffed it up for the rest of the girls. She out of all of them didn’t sound as good as the others full stop.
Sony is again a disapointment, still holding off on what they should’ve done with the rest of the previous idol contestant’s still holding off on Emily.

Hey i saw one of the first posts back in November 2005….someone was talking about Inala and its gangs….I live in Forest Lake, right next to Inala. Anyway i want to know who these gangs are and what they are called. At the start of the year i went to a mates party in Forest Lake, i got fairly off my face and walked back with two mates, a bunch of inala boys got out of a car and beat the crap out of me and my mate, they tried to mugg us but didn’t get anything, i managed to drop one guy and the other ran off. Look, if i wasnt so wasted these boys would have gotten a beating and a half, i was too drunk to defend myself but we didnt get seriously hurt….now someone please tell me who these guys are??? ive been hearing about them bashing people for a while and i want revenge. I’m white and i AM NOT racist, these guys dont represent the inala community but i still think alot of Somoan teenage boys think they are big gangsters. Now me and my mates want to know who these boys are and make them feel some pain, if they want to hurt people in my community, they can come and bring the heat my way, please someone with any info email me and tell me who they are, im in Inala most days and if i see these guys we’ll return the favour. This isnt a race attack, i am in no way racist…but these are little boys running around thinking theyre mobsters and im sick of it! Time someone beat them down.
