A new article about Australian Idol 2006 finalists Damien Leith & Jessica Mauboy is now available.
Tonight saw the culmination of the third Australian Idol. For the last three months, contestants have been battling and belting out their biggest and brightest notes, in an attempt progress through the aggressive selection progress to make it to the grand final at the Sydney Opera House. What happened tonight, is sure to have gob smacked a vast portion of the Australian public. In some strange twist, Kate DeAraugo managed to out vote Emily Williams to win the grand final.
Kate’s performance throughout Australian Idol has been quite good, however compared to other singers – her overall package and skills were lacking. She has progressed through the weeks, by giving good performances and relying on other singers delivering an ok performance. As the competition crept towards the business end, her weaknesses were starting to show. Week after week, Mark would criticise her for not letting go of her voice, not connecting with the music, not transcending. Yet through all the criticism, the public continued to vote for her.
In stark contrast, Emily Williams has been delivering high grade performances week after week. She has received the ultimate ‘good job’ stamp (read: Touchdown!) from Mark no less than three times in the last few weeks. They suggest that she do something, next week she comes out and delivers it bigger and better than they could have imagined. Kyle went as far to say, that he hasn’t heard someone sing Whitney Huston, that isn’t Whitney Huston and make it worth listening too – yet he gives complements like that to Emily.
I have to believe that Kate DeAraugo has won Australian Idol, not through her ability to sing, nor her ability to perform – but in her Barbie Doll like appearance. No sane person could honestly believe that Kate was a superior singer to Emily, yet Kate stands in utter disbelief that she has won. The organisers of Australian Idol, need to some how factor in who is voting – not just the raw number of votes. Assigning the same importance to a 12 year olds vote as to an adults isn’t fair to the performers, they are just being cheated.
One can only hope that Emily Williams soars to the top, just like her amazing voice.

emily didnt win because she bit the hand that was about to feed her. she bagged out casey donovan on rove “look where she is now”.
she won, i.e. ALOT of fans. And i dare say people who voted the year before would be voting again. and most of those people would have jumped the s.s. emily to ride the P&O Dearaugo.
if you seen the response of both mark and marcia when the winner was announced, you’s agree that it was more than disapointment, it was disgust. “im not going to give a touchdown this close to the finals” touchdown was also a bit unfair. giving her one without giving her one. the 2 of them didnt even congratulate kate after the broadcast. sanderlands was stoked and chatted to kate and her family for 20 minutes.

the reason why some people dont believe kate shouldnt have one is because 2 of the 3 judges didnt want her to win either. other people tha know alot about music would disagree with that, bsing kate’s win on some technical flaw, but if emily was that good, she should have been signed in the first place.

Well that was very interesting to read. Just so everyone knows, Kate is not actually a big girl. She is a typical size 14. And really her weight and appearence is not the issue. Emily is a most fantastic singer. But when it came down to singing a song that wasnt on the radio already she was lacking in some ability. I found Kates performance of the single better and as did i think most of Australia. Thats what people voted for. Not a kiwi against a Barbie.
I know Kate personally and have done for a long time. I know how hard she has worked and still is working to get where she wants to be. I would like you to all to spend one day in her shoes or anyone else who is in the public eye frequently and tell me its an easy life. Its not… Kate is one of the best easy going chicks you can meet. I am biased but I dont know Emily personally and I can honestly say from what I know she is just as nice. I hope Emily will do well and it really doesnt matter who came 1st and 2nd because thet both are talented girls that now have the chance of a lifetime and no matter who won they are both great. Congrats to Australia for finally having a platform for hidden musical talent.

I am a big Emily fan and I think Kate is ok. I have to say you are being biased. If you know Kate personally is it true that she has had voice lessons, yes I believe Emily didn’t sound as great with the song maybe tonight and she needs to improve her voice and the way she uses it. But you have to admit she is a true raw talent one of the best with natural ability in Australian Idol who just needs that professional assistance. She hasn’t had that opportunity to really work on her voice.
I agree with the weight issue. Kate isn’t a very big girl, and I hope she doesn’t drastically change her image to please everyone.
Nobody was saying it’s an easy life for people who are famous. But that’s what people get. If you don’t want your life scrutinised and be criticised be content with who you are and forget the fame and fortune.
I know Kate has received alot of criticism (record sales, weight, winning Idol) but if that’s what she really wants she’ll handle it which I think she’s doing at the moment. She just need to be herself.

Kate’s performance through out Oz Idol was B.O.R.I.N.G, Emily always had the W.O.W factor. She is definately not a loser or nor should her talent be ignored. If your into medium performances, medium voice range, below average 0 count touchdowns, then you’ve just chosen a national below average – medium winner!!!
But hey if looks are your thing then you’ve chosen someone who’ll need plastic surgey to keep up maintenance rather than a superior singing voice that can sing the crap out of any one in the Oz Music industry.
Kate’s voice was so husky you couldn’t hear a damn word for a while on one of her songs and how the hell is her voice “rockier” – nice made up word there by the way Torik – when Emily rocked the shit out of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody.
Wow that’s really good you picked up on Emily’s rnb and soprano voice. She also had a voice for rock, alternative, dance, pop, soul…remember? I voted maybe once or twice for both Anne and Emily and Dan. I actually thought Emily was going to win so didn’t bother to vote for the final between her and Kate. I have not bought any of Kates Cd’s and probably never will as I find it boring. I’ll DEFINATELY buy Emily’s CD’s when they come out.
That is why Emily didn’t win because her supporters assumed she would and didn’t bother voting.Then they complain later. We didn’t vote in the final because we liked both and didn’t mind either way.I object to comments about the voters being the young the kids and they aren’t smart enough to know a good voice when they hear it. I’m not complaining at all. It’s in the past and Emily supporters have something to look forward to with her new album coming out this year. I agree young teens are the main one’s to buy the CD’s so their votes are as valid and important as any other age group. I guess some were just a little disappointed that Kate beat Emily in the final when Emily it seemed was a clear winner, due to her natural singing ability, and that’s when the race/looks debate crept in.

Go Emily, can’t wait for your album later this year so SONY BMG claims. They mention that you’ll be moving to Melbourne to work closely with producers working on your Album which is due out later this year, you’ll be able to ‘keep their mouth’s shut’ from arseholes who claimed you wouldn’t make it. I have tried to confirm when Emily will be putting an album out. Sony BMG have not returned my call. I’m certain a lot of people are anxious to purchase an album from Emily. I know I am. She is a very gracious and talented lady and should have won Australian Idol.All the best Emily.

Kate was good, no criticism in that regard – however, we were looking for pure class to be crowned as an Australian Idol, which she does not have. Emily was in a league of her own with her singing prowess and lets face it, ppl – no one else in that competition even came close to her level of talent. It is very disheartening that money (family affordability in pushing through their own) and Anglo-Saxonism became the deciding factors in seeing the less suitable voice beat the purest of singing! Cest la vie – Emily will show us why she should have been the right choice soon! And I hope Australia votes the right way, based ONLY on talent and singing ability rather than have other issues be the deciding factors for the next Idol contest!!!!

Compared to Emily’s voice and the level of how it was delivered was truly phenomenal. Emily’s talent overpowered any of the contestants from day one. She consistently performed far better and reached levels better than Kate which is more than I can say about Kate’s music sales !! I’m not a big fan of looks, why? Great to hear Emily finally has a contract. Though Its sad that they approached way after Aus Idol had finished. I’ve see American idol though I have to say none of them have moved me such as Emily. A truly talented performer with such a great voice. I saw Emily perform at the Opera house she truly does stand out more than Kate. Nothing against Kate at all, I think she did brilliantly well but her singing ability was nothing really special. She just doesn’t have the X or Wow Factor!
