A new article about Australian Idol 2006 finalists Damien Leith & Jessica Mauboy is now available.

Tonight saw the culmination of the third Australian Idol. For the last three months, contestants have been battling and belting out their biggest and brightest notes, in an attempt progress through the aggressive selection progress to make it to the grand final at the Sydney Opera House. What happened tonight, is sure to have gob smacked a vast portion of the Australian public. In some strange twist, Kate DeAraugo managed to out vote Emily Williams to win the grand final.

Kate’s performance throughout Australian Idol has been quite good, however compared to other singers – her overall package and skills were lacking. She has progressed through the weeks, by giving good performances and relying on other singers delivering an ok performance. As the competition crept towards the business end, her weaknesses were starting to show. Week after week, Mark would criticise her for not letting go of her voice, not connecting with the music, not transcending. Yet through all the criticism, the public continued to vote for her.

In stark contrast, Emily Williams has been delivering high grade performances week after week. She has received the ultimate ‘good job’ stamp (read: Touchdown!) from Mark no less than three times in the last few weeks. They suggest that she do something, next week she comes out and delivers it bigger and better than they could have imagined. Kyle went as far to say, that he hasn’t heard someone sing Whitney Huston, that isn’t Whitney Huston and make it worth listening too – yet he gives complements like that to Emily.

I have to believe that Kate DeAraugo has won Australian Idol, not through her ability to sing, nor her ability to perform – but in her Barbie Doll like appearance. No sane person could honestly believe that Kate was a superior singer to Emily, yet Kate stands in utter disbelief that she has won. The organisers of Australian Idol, need to some how factor in who is voting – not just the raw number of votes. Assigning the same importance to a 12 year olds vote as to an adults isn’t fair to the performers, they are just being cheated.

One can only hope that Emily Williams soars to the top, just like her amazing voice.

  3. get a life guys – there are far more important things in this world like poverty, famine, natural disasters, war etc to be concerned about than who won bloody aus idol this year. i’m a fan, i voted for kate, i thought she was great, she won, now i’m over it and waiting for idol 2006 to begin. but i also know what is important in my life, and that is to be worried about the state of the world, rather than who is on the telly and the radio. we have a duty and an obligation to leave this world as a better place for our kids to grow up in, and i will be trying my very best to ensure that i help in some small way. why don’t you all put your energies into donating to a worthy cause, or speaking out on an important issue instead of arguing about singing ability and racism? be good to each other and take care…..

    Having just stumbled over this site tonight and skimming through the entries, it seems blaringly obvious what a sad lonely life you seem to live. Surely someone as worldly and educated such as yourself would have far better things to do in life other than enter idiotic moral arguments with other plebians.

    Well it finally has come out about Emily and her recording contract to Sony BMG. As I said in my post back on the 9th of December and the 22nd of December 2005. I shared the news with all in telling you what my friend from Grundy Television had told me in-relation to Emily getting a contract with Sony BMG, at the same time I was backlashed, called a liar and to even get my facts right! Yet I stood by what my friend had said to me and well I guess the rest speaks for itself now. Anyway, all us Emily Fans can now look forward to that debut cd that Emily will be realising soon…………WAY TO GO !!!!

I saw someone said letting Kate to win Idol 2005 is a business strategy of the company to obtain the money out of the bogan/middle-lower-class/waiting-for-the-next-farmzie-barnzie sorta of thing.. I actually agree. Why would they only keep mentioning kate had actually tried before-hand at the later bit of the Idol series, rather than the earlier part??? And honestly, who knows how the votes are being counted and/or who knows whether SONY-BMG actually has set up a department just to sms for the idols so to get a result that the company wants???? *shrugs* It’s possible.. I still remember my BF and me, we both had out jaws dropped when the show announced KATE as the 2005 idol.. ‘coz we both think Emily should win

    I like Emily and thought she rocked with the songs she sang but it was just that, good song choice, she couldn’t sing everything, sometimes she sounded crap… and her little poor is me act really irritated me and my partner.. Kate however was Kate and didn’t give a crap if she was told she looked fat, so what, who cares how they look, has anybody taken a look at Michael Jackson lately???

    As you mentioned above, you were correct right from the start from the legitte news from your friend! And yes, CONGRATS to Emily for BMG confirming her sign up!!!     That’s extreme to compare “Michael Jackson” to Kate and Emily. There’s no comparison to what Michael’s been through! The likes of Cher, Michael and many others struggled to get their careers started, nothing like American / Australian Idols of today!! Don’t forget Michael is heading into his 50’s, he’s no spring chicken now. When you’ve been in the business for as long as they have, you realise they’re afraid of growing old cos years of hype given by the fans!

    Everything is about pleasing your fans, cos without them, no-one will be famous!!

    As for your comment Kate doesn’t give a crap about her looks? Kate will once she starts seeing herself on her own videoclips and realising that staying in shape will make her look better!! When you’re a star, it is all about pleasing your fans!!

    If you watch TV Commercials, majority of them is to do with BEAUTY! All sorts of creams, cleansers, toners, etc to make people buy to STAYING YOUNG! All sorts of gym equipment, whether to do with Abs, Bum Crunches etc etc. Everything these days is based on IMAGE – LOOKING GOOD!

    Its not what you were before being a star, its what you ARE after you become a STAR!! This is what changes you, cos there’s so much expectations to be a STAR! Same applies to Emily, she will have to take those comments and MAKE HER OWN CHANGES cos people can only tolerate so much of her hard luck stories. If she doesn’t, she won’t last long in the industry herself!! No matter how great her voice is!!

    If you want to compare, look at Whitney Houston!! One of the most glamourous singing stars of all times!! First of all, had the voice, the figure and personality. Worst mistake? Marrying Bobby Brown!! She was a Model, released great albums, then became a Movie Star, but at the same time behind the scenes did all kinds of drugs together with her loser husband. There were serious allegations of physical abuse even to the point of a missing front tooth. Whitney tried to make a come-back with the same management team who took her to the top, only for her latest album to be a major flop!! Forced into Rehab and trying to pick herself up again!

    Meanwhile new stars arise like Destiny’s Child, Alicia Keys, Gwen Stefani, Fantasia, Ciara and many more!! When one star slips up, other young stars seize the opportunity to take it from you!!

    Michael Jackson had his time, but despite what he’s done to himself, he’s still a STAR!! From the sweet child he was to the person he’s grown up to be, Michael Jackson will always live on!!! He’s given more than enough on this earth, like to charity, his music and helping sick children is what I focus on. What he does personally to himself is his bad luck! He is even trying to make a come-back, but the fans have moved on to the new young stars like Usher, Kanye West and many more… Focused too much on trying to please, rather than believing in himself!! Real shame – great musician!!

    Sir Paul McCartney… Soul Legend even today! Believed in himself, has taken his career to new steps in his life!! From a young rock star to a well respected LEGEND!!

    Thanks for the well wishes. Hope your holiday break was enjoyable? as I found mine to be. It was great to spend time with my loved ones, at the same time watching and looking at my girls and the realisation of how much they have grown. However it’s now back to reality you know work and stuff aarrrggghh!!!!! need a longer holiday …lol.

    Anyway, it was a delight in sharing with you about Emily and in her recieving her recording contract to SONY BMG. Like I said before, when my friend from Grundy shared this information with me I thought it was fantastic!!!!! he wanted me to keep it to myself back then( but hey how could I). I was so excited ,I mean Emily really moved me everytime she sang.

    When I shared the news in here I was attacked, as you well know by Diplomat…(bless her soul I’m sure she meant well). I do hope her trip to India went well! In also stating that a few others told me to get my facts right. However, it’s all good. As for Emily and when her debut single will be realised, there is apparent talk that her single will be released round late February early March with her album due out in the second half of the year. News is that Emily will be relocating to Melbourne in the next couple of weeks, there she will be working with some Australian and Overseas songwriters in helping her to collaborate her debut album. So in all it’s exciting stuff, all we can do now is sit back and wait for the realease of what I believe will be well waited for.

    Anyway, keep it real I will keep in touch in letting you know what I know/find out when it all happens, till then keep smiling take care.

  28. Hi all, i dont normally post messages and i dont normally really give a **** about idol. I’ve been quite dissappointed with prevoius winners. BUT….. Emily Williams is a star. When i first heard her sing i got shivers . And to me thats what music is all about, touching you on a different level. Kate does nothing for me, and having waited all this time and listening to her published works still does nothing. For the first time in Idol history i will purchasing Emily Williams CD when it gets released. As for this ‘Diplomat’ person (read over all her conversations in this thread) i find it extremely hilarious that she’s posted no new comments since its been made official that sony has signed Emily. For someone who is so opinunated and calls on all their ‘expertise’ in the music industry, that they should suddenly start brooding when proven wrong, her comments caused me to write this thread. Sometimes people like that should keep their comments to a minimum, then they wouldnt look so stupid. Emily has it all , the looks, the voice and the support of thousands of Australians. She’s my Idol.

    Emily was more consistantly fantastic singer, who i think got boring 2wards the end coz she was just sooo consistently gud.
    Kate started out pretty dam badly, i wouldnt have got her past the 1st few rounds. but she got better and better as the competition went on, and eventually in the last 2 rounds she was pretti equal 2 emily.
    as 4 racism in the competition, i think its not true, i dont think the judges influenced anyone, and neither of them were ugly, and they both had gud personalities.
    So, for me i put it down 2 the best songs sung by them during the final 13.
    Kate(2)- “How could an angel break my heart” and “The Impossible Dream”
    VS Emily(3)- “All the Way”, “I’m every woman” and “Make it happen”
    i thought emily wud win, but i wanted kate 2 win, and b4 u say imma bogan aussie im half Greek, Italian. And ive been studying music for 7 years, so all those pplz who were talkin about emily and kate sceeching r all wrong, its actually very hard 2 do that.

From what I’ve read about your comments you know nothing about your Samoan heritage. You’ve depicted the negative aspects of our people which is unbalanced and soo untrue. I am half Samoan and German. I look more palagi than I do Samoan. A lot of people assume that I am Australian because of my blonde hair and blue eyes, but whenever I mention that I am half German and Samoan they’re mouths drop wide open. Many people that I’ve gotten to know have put down our Samoan race this of course not knowing that I am half Samoan are the ones that I have nothing to do with because I ensure that I educate and blast them for their ridiculously racist remarks.I have cousins of Euro,Maori, Cook Island,Kiwi,Scottish descent. Most were born in Australia and New Zealand. My mother is Samoan and my father is German. My mother and my Samoan side have all taught me how to read, write and speak Samoan. I have never felt more closer to any side than my mothers. Not to disrespect my Dad German side in any sense. I have 2 sisters and 3 brothers, my brothers will always be the rowdy,crazy bunch they are. However in saying that we all grew up together with our extended Samoan side which till this day will never let go off because its all about family, respect and being learning and accepting each other TOGETHER. All have embraced and were bought up with the language and values DESPITE NEGATIVITY and the stereotype (Mike). I was raised with my Samoan language in tact so here’s one for you ,’Aua ete fia Palagi!! Get yourself involved man don’t put your other culture down because there’s soo much more to our wonderful Samoan culture.

    I for one hate watching Australian TV it represents the ideals , values of Australian way of life and so on , and so on and so on! There’s nothing wrong with that but It makes me feel like so many other ethnic backgrounds that there’ not good enough and no where to be seen.

    There’s definately lack of or little of brown faces on Auss TV. For those who say that Emily is a fake, take a look at the many lies of the Government. The biggest cons who are suppose to ensure that they represent honesty and integrity of our country. Australian Television is always, always catered for Aussies, doesn’t represent nor will it display ongoing cultural activities. Don’t get me wrong,I have Aussie mates who couldn’t care less why because everything is catered for them. Everything on Radio, Television, magazines , news etc etc. but all this crap about Emily being a liar, screecher is utter bullshit. With more vocal training and how to handle the media Emily like any other artist will improve in time. I’d like to see an array of ethnic colours on Australian Television so that we all contribute, grow and develop together. Not soully go on and on and on about 1 culture 24/7! Even watching news,how many other ethnic groups are accounted for if they are any worldly disasters? Aussie’s are always mentioned while the rest of casualties from different ethnic cultures aren’t? Current affairs, aussie soaps, drama’s. Non exclusion of other cultures makes it difficult to watch and identify with and be counted as ethnic Australian.

    I Can’t stand like the likes of Neighbours,Home and Away, Heartland, McCleods Daughters. Why? Because they all are about Aussie lifestyles, relationships. They’re all total crap. I would of thought that Auss Television would have been more of a mix coz there are soo many cultures. When I saw Auss Idol, i thought finally a show that shows a diverse range of talented kids some that were born here from a different ethnic back ground and some who aren’t. Emily made me see how difficult it was dealing with the media and the types of questions that they’d ask her. Don’t forget there a lot more con artists than Emily. Ive got nothing against Kate. I thought she did well but Emily, Emily , Emily you are the total bomb of Auss Idol of 2005 and have made me VERY PROUD of my SAMOAN heritage. So did Anne Robertson, they shine and inspire our younger Polynesian generation. Same deal for Random, they may not look like centrefolds (why should they?) But they ensure that they are hundreds if not thousands that can encourage our Polynesia youth and not cause trouble as some of you have stated.

    I read Silver Angels comments who clearly is a blatent bimbo catering to what real Aussie men would like to see! Who gives a shit about what they look like. People can be cruel if your not the ideal Aussie model bimbo type. I read the comment from Silver Angel,who has nooo idea. Catering to what men want to see is a load of total shit. It should be the voice and talent that really counts.

    C’mon channel 10 I’d like to see more variety of people from different ethnic backgrounds maybe then your station will lead the way to cater for all ethnic groups and Aussies together. There’s been so much racism from last year leading into this year, maybe if there were more television shows other than the same old boring Aussie lifestyles, ideals, values I wouldn’t have to keep switching to SBS or switchig off the telly off completely. The riots last year are and still are a concern, maybe if there was more television shows that deal with our youth & communities of different cultures there would be more of an understanding as an educational and learning resource and not soully concentrate day in and day out for 1 overall culture. Our next generation from whatever background will grow and feel that Australia is there home and that they do belong despite they’re ethnic background. Some have said that were’ more serious issues around the world, why not start with our own back yard.

It made me totally ill to think that Emily’s talent was totally ignored due to the ever going bullshit of mediocre talent.

  46. Thank God Emily finally got her contract!! Bout time they gave her one. Emily may not be blonde or model material though she definately has the X factor above Kate anyday, that’s for sure. Who cares if one is prettier or easy on the eye, the singing ability and to be compared to the likes of Whitney or Mariah is definately thumbs up!! Emily’s voice will be remembered always for her natural singing ability. I can honestly say none of Kate’s performances have been a stand out. Where as Emily’s was cool, hip and the only singer that can reach and hit the high notes. A comparison to perhaps Pattie Labelle, not a super model but attractive, has the voice to back her natural singing talent.
