A new article about Australian Idol 2006 finalists Damien Leith & Jessica Mauboy is now available.
Tonight saw the culmination of the third Australian Idol. For the last three months, contestants have been battling and belting out their biggest and brightest notes, in an attempt progress through the aggressive selection progress to make it to the grand final at the Sydney Opera House. What happened tonight, is sure to have gob smacked a vast portion of the Australian public. In some strange twist, Kate DeAraugo managed to out vote Emily Williams to win the grand final.
Kate’s performance throughout Australian Idol has been quite good, however compared to other singers – her overall package and skills were lacking. She has progressed through the weeks, by giving good performances and relying on other singers delivering an ok performance. As the competition crept towards the business end, her weaknesses were starting to show. Week after week, Mark would criticise her for not letting go of her voice, not connecting with the music, not transcending. Yet through all the criticism, the public continued to vote for her.
In stark contrast, Emily Williams has been delivering high grade performances week after week. She has received the ultimate ‘good job’ stamp (read: Touchdown!) from Mark no less than three times in the last few weeks. They suggest that she do something, next week she comes out and delivers it bigger and better than they could have imagined. Kyle went as far to say, that he hasn’t heard someone sing Whitney Huston, that isn’t Whitney Huston and make it worth listening too – yet he gives complements like that to Emily.
I have to believe that Kate DeAraugo has won Australian Idol, not through her ability to sing, nor her ability to perform – but in her Barbie Doll like appearance. No sane person could honestly believe that Kate was a superior singer to Emily, yet Kate stands in utter disbelief that she has won. The organisers of Australian Idol, need to some how factor in who is voting – not just the raw number of votes. Assigning the same importance to a 12 year olds vote as to an adults isn’t fair to the performers, they are just being cheated.
One can only hope that Emily Williams soars to the top, just like her amazing voice.

Sorry haven’t gotten back to you till now, work in the Security Field this time of year is just so damn demanding…..lol. Anyway, in relation to you asking me about whether it is for real about “Emily differently been signed to Sony BMG “or if it’s just a rumour! I have just spoken with my friend from Grundy and he stands by his word and has told me it is differently true! I also asked him why hasn’t Sony comfirmed this! His reply to me was he has no-control of when Sony will make the announcement though he believes it to be very soon.
In fact he also stated to me that it’s been very frustrating, as they have recieved numerous of calls in-relation to this. Perhaps now that certain information has been leaked out, it wont be long before Sony makes the announcement.
As the saying goes all “good things happen to those who wait”. Remembering when “Lee harding was signed nothing came out till his debut single was ready for release and all the hype started, so lets sit back and wait for the New Year to for see us and see what it may hold.

She now gets the chance of a lifetime, that the Australian public obviously thought she earned, to make a record. Either it will be good or it will flop… It has been going alright since its delayed release, besides what Paul Cashmere says.
I have her album and if you accually listen to it, its quite good :o) Im looking forward to seeing her 2nd album becasue she will have much more time to work on it and get it just right.
Kate is a wonderful person and in my opinion, didnt nessicarily ‘deserve’ to win because they both deserved to win, but she earned her win.
You have to admit she did put ALOT of effort into Idol…she had 2years of vocal training, lost 30kg, and changed herself to become what she wanted to be.
Dont you think that someone who put that much effort into something should in the end have all pay off and win?
And look, Emily has her recording deal now aswell, whats the big deal? The both have contracts, everyones happy.

I can see you are an avid Emily fan and that is fine. The thing I want to say though is in reference to this and other things below.

It seems that people across the board are of the impression that coming second guarantees a contract. This is not the case despite the 2nd place getter being signed here the past two years. I personally believe that THAT is one of the biggest misconceptions Emily herself made, this assumption, hence her horrific comments on Rove Live just prior to the OH Finals. It is not Emily’s right having come second to be signed on to Sony BMG, it is a privilege IF they chose to take her on. Please people remember that.
Also Gill for the record. Casey has not “dropped off” as you call it. She is a very busy performer and one lucky enough to play places like The Basement in Sydney by request. Quite an auspicious event for an artist of her tender years, considering other artist “by request” have been international artists who clammer to perform their acoustic sets there and a lot of them are turned down. You seem to be judging ones success on commerical airplay, where they stand in the charts and the like, which is not the case at all. An example of this is a performer named Dave Graney, who has won dozens of Aria’s and Industry kudos but his songs have never even seen the light of day on “commercial” Video Hits style shows nor commerical radio! He is living the dream though and making a motsa doing so, moreso than the likes of ANY of the “Idols” here in Australia!
Re your indigenous comments too. Full blooded Australian Aboriginals are the ONLY peolple indigenous to this country, hence being called Aborigines, which MEANS Indigenous People and also NATIVE. You may well have been born here Gill and call yourself an Australian (as I do to) but if you have no aboriginal blood in you, your ancestors are indigenous to another part of the world. If you want to know more about your heritage and geneology, I suggest you find out what “foreign crap”(as you put it), you hail from originally. (for the record, my foreign blood is Irish/European).

Hmm Re the Wiggles. Well they found a niche in the marketplace that had not been filled at the time. For the record though, I did appreciate the talents of “The Cockroaches’ back when I was a teenager! (The Cockroaches as they were known then..being an “aussie mainstream band” are pretty much behind “the wiggles” and Anthony and Anthony’s brother WERE two members of the original band if memory serves (Anthony’s brother is now captain feathersword BTW..lol).
They DO have talent though in the genre they have decided to go with and that is proven by them all being multi millionaires personally and also merchandising and other coupe’s will put them into the billionaire status over time! VERY ingenious men all of them, and talented in MANY area’s, so from that point, YES I suppose I DO believe they are “ACE”.
For the record too, I didn’t comment on Blunt’s voice apart from saying it was “unique”. His song writing skills though are not in the league of Cat Stevens or others in that realm of songwriting ability. As I said and I will guarantee this, Mr Blunt is a blip on the music scene compared to others. Average never came into the equation and as for Emily’s voice…. I don’t even think it reaches the level OF average, but that is my personal opinion and obviously the opinion of at least 50.1% of the Australian voting public for Idol 2005.

that just needed some professional mending. Kate is also a very beautiful performer, she shines on stage. Emily doesn’t do the same, she doesn’t shine, she takes another route, by
pounding out the BIG notes and not doing much else! In additon, Emily did do a good job with
two Whitney Houston Classics, but the rest of her Performances were just pure gravy for me!
Emily will most probably get a good career, and so will Kate!

I agree – Kate was probably won because of her looks… I saw her on Carols by Candlelight and that performance was so mediocre. But she did seem like she worked hard during Idol to get where she is now. Too bad her album/single performance is not doing so well.

I have just read the first 20-30 entries and I have some things to say.
I am a 16 year old girl. When we were voting, we were thinking, “would I buy EMILY or would I KATE?”

She is like, what all our idols look like. I know it’s a stereotype and all, but some things will NEVER CHANGE. You people saying “she’s so stereotypical” obviously have no idea what goes on in the real world. It’s like men will always think of attractive women as sex toys. It’s life, GET USED TO IT.
Secondly, to those saying Australia is racist in who wins Australian Idol, are just plain stupid. Do you seriously believe that the only reason Kate won, was because she was white? I doubt it. And anyway, HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT when the FIRST AUSTRALIAN IDOL was Guy Sebastian, would did NOT “look” Australian. Obviously you don’t think about things too clearly, do you?
Thirdly, on Emily’s “screeching” – I think she DID have the best voice in the competition. Kate’s was less harsh I suppose, and the songs on her album scream “Rock Chick” (which is actually what I’m into) But there’s no question about, big notes mean big sales, and anyone who can sing like Emily WILL go far.
But in saying that, I didn’t like Emily. This sounds incredbily cliché, I know, but she “was not being herself”. She would sing songs to tug on the heartstrings of the Australian public, and always “forced” these fake tears into her eyes, so that Mark (You-Can’t-Sing-A-Song-Unless-You-Have-A-personal-REASON-For-Singing-It) Holden would THINK she actually put “real emotion” into it, and give her this high aclaim. To me, she was like one of the those Miss America or whatever contestants, that wish for “World Peace” to seem nice, and try and make people think they actually CARE what happens to everyone around them. That is what disgusted me the most. She used absolutely EVERYTHING upsetting in her life to try and win the hearts of the Australian public. And because she was so incredibly FAKE about everything, she didn’t win. Kate, loveable, down-to-earth, honest Kate won.
Personally, I think the BEST singer, and by that I mean BEST VOICE ALONE should have won. Therefore Emily. But from what I wrote, can’t you SEE WHY Kate won?
And another thing – the Australian Idol TV producers seem to make it so that the person they WANT to win WOULD win. Think about it.
My reason for this is that last year, my favourite Idol was Anthony Callea, because of his AMAZING voice. Now when he and Casey were left, I ALWAYS watched “Inside Idol” with interest, and I noticed that they always focused, in some way or another, on CASEY. They always showed Anthony as the “short little man” and Casey as the “brilliant 16 year old who has been the underdog from the start”. I think that the producers of the show can somehow affect the way the Australian public votes.
Lastly – Either Emily or Lee Harding will go the furthest. I know adults vote and watch, but when it comes down to it, the KIDS vote and watch the most. Lee appealed to us all. He was funny, cool, maybe a bit try-hard-y at times, but all in all – the package. Yeah, he couldn’t sing that well, but he always got the audience jumping. He was the most fun to watch and to listen to :)

Ok! If you’re still able to access the net and reply. hhhmmmmm! Ok! So Kate’s album could not get to the stores in time for people to buy so it debut badly at 10 on the aria chart. Now it has dropped to 22 or something!?! Are some of the stores still haven’t stock her albums yet! I’ve got an idea and you can disagree ofcourse! During this Idol-3 series, ratings has dropped! So less people would notice her and buy her cds.
If each kid text 5-10 times to vote for her then they would need to buy 5-10 cds each to to represent the true value of sales. And if each family watches the show and all voted, they are unlikely to buy a cd each. She is doing ok in singles, that’s because its only $4.35 or something. ~$25/album, takes a lot of commitment from a true fan to buy (its new year, kids got to buy clothes to wear and save money to go out).
Yes we can agree or disagree on the talents of any artist, but if an artist sells more cds (especially albums) doesn’t that mean he/she/they have a lot more fans that like their music, and are willing to part with their hard earn cash. Like you said, the wiggles are good at what they do, kids are their audience. Didn’t 1.5 million? people watch the finals of this years idol? So if >50% vote for Kate, why aren’t they buying her album? SonyBME produce platinum (70,000) of her albums!!!! hhmmm!! What are they going to do with the rest of them?????

I was glad Emily lost, she’s the better of the two in my opinion. Kate is tied into a contract she won, and has rushed to released an album that seems to have flopped, outside of Australia it’s unheard of. I think Emily will sign into a better contract and will not rush to produce an album, instead a quality album will be released and it just my break international markets.

That is a very very interesting point of view to take. I think it certainly rings true of last year, when you look at the medicore success that Casey has had. I’m disappointed that Kate won as I honestly think that Emily was a better performer; however in the long run it makes little difference since they both got contracts. The immediate pressure removed from Emily will be a good thing for her in the long run I think.

Oh gawd, we have reached the level of such extreme reverse-racism that if a ‘white’ Australian wins, everyone gets mad. Does multiculturalism mean that whites can never win anything? No Al, Emily is not just as Australian as Kate,i’m sure she herself identifies as somethine else altogether, as most posters on this board do to. ‘Australian’ is an ethnicity, based on the name given to this continent by white settlers and their offspring. If you actually lived in a multicultural place, like Sydney, you would know that people of non-Northern European backgrounds identify themselves as ‘Maori’,’Chinese’,’Iraqi’ etc, they rarely call themselves ‘Australian’….as it is widely considered to only apply to those who immigrated here en masse up until the 1960s where the ‘idea’ of an ‘Aussie’ had already been established. If these people use the word ‘Aussie’, it is usually as an insult…like ‘Aussie bogan’ or ‘white aussie scum’.
These identity crisis'(and their consequences like the vehement anti-white racism seen on this board,and seen on the streets of Sydney with ‘skippy-bashing’ and the ‘leb bashing’ at Cronulla) are just part and parcel of a multicultural society. People identify themselves from their background, not a piece of paper citizenship. Sydney is divided up into ethnic ghettos, it is like a mini-UN with territories and everything. Some places whites can’t go without getting abused, some places where Asians can’t go, some places where Arabs can’t go etc. It’s probably hard for you to imagine, Al, living in mostly white QLD, not minority white Sydney where white girls get raped just for being white…so you can talk about how ‘great’ multiculturalism is, without knowing the true realities of it….and everytime you say how ‘great’ it is, you are partly responsible for these race motivated rapes(there have been 72 from 1999-2004 reported and it still goes on everyday, but the NSW ALP is controlled by the branch stacking ethnic minorities..who make sure it doesnt receive much media coverage(and when the cops do nothing about it, the whites get so mad that they rebel, like what happened in Cronulla). The cops were also instructed to ‘turn a blind eye’ to the anti-white violence,including women getting bashed/church burnings/rapes, by muslims after Cronulla.
If the governments wanted everyone to identify just as ‘Australian’ they would not have encouraged immigrants to hang onto their old identities, and instead prescribe the American model of the ‘melting pot’ rather than multiculturalism.
If a person of Maori heritage living in Australia identifies as a Maori, and a person of Chinese ancestry identifies as ‘Azn’, it naturally follows that those who identify with nowhere else but Australia are labelled ‘Australians’, in the ethnic sense. Even most Aborigines don’t call themselves ‘Aussie’, because ‘Australia’ is a European word, so they retain their ‘Koori’ identity instead. What amuses me most is when non-whites say ‘its an aboriginal country anyway so you have no rights to complain whitey’, as if it were aborigines that let them into the country, not white governments. Then we get into the usual ‘convict trash’ racist talk like ‘Diplomat’ uses, and creates fairytale stories about the ‘poor white trash’ needing help from the ‘noble savages’.
It’s not perfect, but it’s reality. A society with lots of races, inevitably becomes racist….on all sides. Australia is only ‘racist’ because a few governments CHOSE to import people of different backgrounds. China, Japan, Tonga etc aren’t ‘racist’, because they don’t allow people of races other than their own to even immigrate.
So ‘white aussies’ remain the whipping boys and bare all the brunt of the ‘racism’ charges, for a situation they had no part in creating, because the governments decided multiculturalism would be ‘nice’. Import lots of people, create unrest and division, then blame the ‘bogans’ for not capitulating enough. Then we get the situation where even a white person winning a bloody singing competition is ‘racist’. This is the reason Pauline Hanson got so popular, whites got sick of the double standards, and the attitudes of the anti-white racists(and self hating whites who like to whinge about ‘rednecks’) are the reason why someone else will fill her shoes when whiteys get fed up again.
The same exact thing is happening in Europe with immigrants and their attitudes. Hopefully people will learn, before a new Hitler comes into power to correct the problems(eg see LePen in France now the most likely new president at the next election, and he makes Pauline Hanson seem pro-multicultural).

By saying she isn’t an australian or as good as a ‘white girl’ is pure racist. When a singer preforms, its what comes out of his or her mouth that counts, and Emily’s vocal talents were better. ok, i have inside information. after speaking to someone from kate de arouges home town of bendigo i have found out that people didnt vote for kate because they liked her voice or aything like that, they voted for her because they were payed to. kate’s dad owns a big either steel or timber company in bendigo and he is one of the richest men in the town. and apparently, he was giving out $10000 of simcards for people to use to vote for kate. her album is going down the shitter and emily is releasing an album soon, which will prove that it wasnt popularity kate won by, but with a rich daddy…..i mean, come on
There were rumours of that happening not long after she won the competition. It was of course dismissed at the time, however given that I didn’t think she should have won in the first place – I thought it quite possible. I wonder if it’ll ever be officially confirmed or not.

First and foremost, I sat here and read the amazing revelations as produced in this thread. Inherently, the racism card was bound to come out, and as we all know it was up to us whether we were going to let it reach the extremities that it has reached here.
Big ups to Keep it Real, Proud Polynesian Kiwi, PI Sista No.1 & Black cat. The only way to move forward beyond the generalised and stereotypical public perception of us Pacific Islanders is to challenge it. Indeed there are always going to be the adolescents, the ‘bad seeds’ within any race that give them a bad name. Now, following on from the points made earlier, have be not moved on beyond the racism of the 1950’s? and the era of the White Australia policy? Are we not in an era where our judgements of people are made purely on our personal experience of them and how they have directly and imminently affected our lives? Are we really that well travelled and knowledgable that we are going to make assumptions, judgements which only God can make, on a race in its entirety based upon the samoans in a car in one city?
I for one, identify with being Australian, of Tongan descent I have never felt my loyalty towards Australia nor Tonga falter due to racist slurs are anything of the such flung my way. Bondy…your ignorance and spitefulness is what encourages discrimination, and is what continues to be flung back at you from every direction whether it be from us Polynesians or any other race. What give is what you get in return, and your initial generalisation of the Samoan race in its entirety is what set of such a cataclysmic discussion. Re-assess what your issues are, is it really that Emily identified with Inala? or is it that you don’t want a Polynesian mentioning Inala on national television? Because if its the latter, you are obviously not in the 21st century, the era of multiculturalism and pluralism. Terra Nullius was definitely something to be learnt from, but why not move forward and become a positive constituent for the progress of Aborigines?
Polynesian youth, like any other nationality suffers from their downfalls, and in it means nothing to badger them about it. There are the dedicated polynesians such as myself who are now making moves to better the situation, the outlook the worldview of these youth, and believe me there are a myriad of these people around. But rather then sitting back and aiming to criticis PI’s to the ground, why not step back and let us move forward, or with the grace of God help us! So to those of you such as Mike, don’t winge, dont be the downfall of your Samoan half, step forward and help out, become and advocate for education because we can only move forward when educated. This most enlightened perception that I am presenting has been accentuated by the development of the Pacific Islander Council, an initiative of the federal Government.
On a final note, as always we are bound to learn in retrospect, so perhaps the racism card being thrown into this thread has been the will of God. Bring the ignorant out of darkness, and let the light of pluralism shine forth as the only way forward for this most prosperous land that is Australia.
