Australian Idol Winner: Kate DeAraugo Vs Emily Williams

A new article about Australian Idol 2006 finalists Damien Leith & Jessica Mauboy is now available.

Tonight saw the culmination of the third Australian Idol. For the last three months, contestants have been battling and belting out their biggest and brightest notes, in an attempt progress through the aggressive selection progress to make it to the grand final at the Sydney Opera House. What happened tonight, is sure to have gob smacked a vast portion of the Australian public. In some strange twist, Kate DeAraugo managed to out vote Emily Williams to win the grand final.

Kate’s performance throughout Australian Idol has been quite good, however compared to other singers – her overall package and skills were lacking. She has progressed through the weeks, by giving good performances and relying on other singers delivering an ok performance. As the competition crept towards the business end, her weaknesses were starting to show. Week after week, Mark would criticise her for not letting go of her voice, not connecting with the music, not transcending. Yet through all the criticism, the public continued to vote for her.

In stark contrast, Emily Williams has been delivering high grade performances week after week. She has received the ultimate ‘good job’ stamp (read: Touchdown!) from Mark no less than three times in the last few weeks. They suggest that she do something, next week she comes out and delivers it bigger and better than they could have imagined. Kyle went as far to say, that he hasn’t heard someone sing Whitney Huston, that isn’t Whitney Huston and make it worth listening too – yet he gives complements like that to Emily.

I have to believe that Kate DeAraugo has won Australian Idol, not through her ability to sing, nor her ability to perform – but in her Barbie Doll like appearance. No sane person could honestly believe that Kate was a superior singer to Emily, yet Kate stands in utter disbelief that she has won. The organisers of Australian Idol, need to some how factor in who is voting – not just the raw number of votes. Assigning the same importance to a 12 year olds vote as to an adults isn’t fair to the performers, they are just being cheated.

One can only hope that Emily Williams soars to the top, just like her amazing voice.

  1. you put too much stock into what the judges say, and not enough pressure on the volume+ button on your remote. Emily is a screecher, and quite often out of tune when she’s screaming so loud she can’t hear herself. They are both on par as singers… and a 1% difference in votes reflects that. 49.5% / 50.5% … could have gone either way.

Kate is fat, and Emily looks like wesley snipes… I think that about accounts for the 1% swing, better fatty than manly.

  2. I agree completely Alistair. I’m sure Emily is going to get record deals anyway, so it’s probably not such a big deal.

Regarding the 12YO versus adult voting: Maybe it’s true adults will have a better sense of who’s a better singer, but I think it would mostly be the 12-16 year olds who are going out and buying the CD’s. When you vote in Idol, you’re supposed to vote for the person you think “if she made a CD, I’d buy it”. Maybe, because of that, Kate should have won, because more of those 12-15 year olds are going to buy her CD.

I really wanted Emily to win though :( I should have voted.

  3. #4, LOL… can you imagine Lee Harding doing the Punk Jelly Wiggle? At least the video of that would sell better to certain niche market groups than his music ever will.

  4. Emily Williams is a class above the rest!!! she will make it though!!! Good luck to Kate, she has a good voice but Emily in my opinion is a World class singer and can match the best, record companies are crazy if they don’t offer her a contract.

  5. Thats you opion mate! Good job we all don’t like the same style of singers. Both girls did well to get to the final. I think kate will do an excellant job. Like to hear your opion if the punk wiggle won?

  6. AB,

I think Lee will have already secured a contract with one of the big labels (I know Dan has). For the genre of music that he is into (punk), you could put a good band behind him and he would sell CDs all day long. He is energetic, has the right look and sounds great. I would have actually preferred to see Lee and Emily in the final, it would have been an awesome contrast – imagine the difference in the winner’s song!

    Al.

  7. Hi there,

I can see the point that someone made about Emily screeching, but if you know a little about music you would understand that Emily chose songs that are Soprano (which means high-pitched or shrill), she has a Soprano voice, somthing which is very rare and she is very lucky to have. All I can say is that Australia loves a bogan, hence the fact that Kate won, she not much a barbie doll… but it is the classic bogan to barbie convert story that australia loves so much… not the started with more tallent and finished with more tallent story. Well I can tell you that Idol will be spewing becuase Kate will be washed up after a year and Emily will go on to a fabulous career. At least this way we wont have to wait for a year (Afetr Idol album) to get an album that we would listen to out of Emily.

  8. I felt Dan England and Emily Williams were clearly the standout performers and am pleased to see Dan has been signed.Kate will do well also. She is almost a female version of John Farnham, there are many facial similarities when she sings, this maybe due to the fact that Kate’s singing teacher is Vanetta Fields who also was a back-up singer for John for many years.

  9. The fairest singer won on the night. Kate is very easy going on the eye, very presentable. She also has a voice that can sing many styles and genres. As Kyle said in an interview in the paper, Emily is very hard and scary looking to the eye. Her personality was lacking and the shy, whimpering, mouth covering act was grating on peoples nerves. Kate is confident and well spoken. Emily was a screecher, she also did have an OK voice at times. It matters not how many touchdowns you get, it matters who votes and who will maybe buy your albums. Kate is the better choice.

Lets thankgod it wasn’t Lee (MR Shoot myself in the foot) Harding. His vocal range, was as he admitted, not strong. He struggled with notes and his voice so overcompensated in changing the beat so you could barely understand or enjoy the song then he had a ridiculous look, and sillier dancing, as he had NO punk about him. He was more Boy Next Door turned TRYHARD punker. He will have a short career and should always keep his hand in good practice for scooping icecreams.

Emilys’ family or ganster looking boyfriend should never have claimed that voting was racially biased by us Aussies. That comment alone would of made me vote for anyone else but Emily, and I am a Kiwi myself. Thanks for listening

  10. I disagree denise, the better singer lost on the night, Kate has a great look and a good voice, good luck to her singing career. Emily is a class act performer with a incredible voice, we should not judge people on looks and personality, everybody has different personalities and it all comes with experience.

  11. objectively, both singers are OK. however, emily has a broader range while kate is more middle of the road/country. i would choose emily in the sense that she defies the typical pop idol mode (single mother, not white, not eye candy). i want people to look beyond the stereotype. but i guess white australia has spoken and i would respect that.

somehow there has to be a way for idols to be judged in 2 ways: combining the public scores with the scores of a highly reputable panel of judges (if it is necessary to put marcia, kyle and mark there, add10-20 judges to muddle up the results). we need a cross section. we cannot depend on numbers alone. there has to be quality and not just numbers.

  12. Emily Williams, what class I mean it was her all along, She had the best voice and the right look for an Australian Idol. Kate is great also but Emily I mean is she is up there with the likes of Desinty Child and Gwen stefani she is the BEST.

  13. kate should’ve got off way earlier in the series
emily is the bomb! although i would’ve PREFEREDDDD EMILY TO SING MAYBE TONIGHT
lets hope she scores a recording contract and kick kates ass in everything =D

  14. Kate is a very beautiful person with an excellent voice whereas Emily on the other hand is way less that!! she’s got an ugly face and a not so good voice, Kate deserved to win, she’s young with no bagges, Emily has a baby, there shouldnt be idol mummies

  15. You buddy suck balls, you are saying kate won by her look
that isnt the case, she won because she was the BETTER singer and everyone knows that
Sure Emily had the x-factor and could dance but her voice couldnt hold most of the songs she was singing.
The bottom line is that kate deserved to win and Emily was using her daughter as an emotional/heart tugger so she can gain more votes, so next time dont discriminate because the BETTER PERSON WON and everyone knows it but discriminate on the fact that maybe australia wanted the winner to be Kate because she WAS THE BETTER SINGER
and although Emily was gud she still didnt cut it on the top 2 performance she sung 2 songs which she screwed up majorily she couldnt carry emotions and she was a mile off pulling off since you’ve been gone, now ill admitt she sung maybe tonight better then kate but at least kate gave it her all and she didnt rely on the fact that she had a gud fan base, she went out every week and was risking elimination, Emily was always the favourite but when the votes really mattered Kate was the stand out now all of you can either accept that or go F**K yourselves

  16. This was the worst idol I have seen since I have been watching ; Emily should have won outright ; kate got no touchdowns at all ; was constantly criticised for her appearance and also sang like a robot most of the time , no emotion etc…, plus this was her 3rd try anyway at the competition, where Emily only entered once ; unfortunately because Dan England , Lee Harding etc… lost out to a NZ born polynesian girl with Samoan , pacific island etc… origins – Emily; the media , radio people etc… of Australia united together to try and push the last remaining real and pure Australian of mediocre talent – Kate over the line .Yes ; the man Kyle – judge was actively doing this on his radio station in the week leading up to the opera house final. And I thought Australia was not a racist country ??It is unfortunately alive and well here !!

Dan England would have been a much better competition for Emily as he really does seem to have a great voice .Emily should have won with Dan England second and Anne Robertson – another Polynesian Samoan girl third.

Australia has to face the fact that future Australian idol competitions are not just for the white australians – or the white anglo saxon types , or for the wogs – Italians , Greeks etc… but for all races even the NZ polynesian cousies , pacific islanders -Samoans , Fijians , Tongans etc…. who also happen to have world class talent wheb it comes to music , sports etc… and also deserve a fair shot in the land they now call home which is Australia ; after all isn’t this a nation of Immigrants ???

  17. wtf emily was the clear Australian idol she had everything over Kate …. but oh well proves the stupidness and racism of Australia. They kicked out all the wogs and mauri’s at the start and now they dont even let the clear better performer win …. Australia is going to the dogs in my opinion. Guy was lucky to win cause he is exceptionally a great singer over shannon nolls. Im not saying kate is crap but honestly the competition isnt on looks and the poofter that said Emily looks like a man well ya mum is a fat cow that has a penis hahaha

  18. I 100% agree with joni, I think the best competition would have been Emily against Dan, at least Emily would of had someone to compete against.
Not saying that Kate couldn’t sing, but come on now, let’s face it, not only did Kate get rejected twice prior to this Australian Idol, but she had to go to singing classes aswell in order to get her fat behind in this years Australian Idol.
At least Emily was a natural singer. Yes it might sound to people that she screeches, but see different sounds to different listeners. She didn’t screeched, she reached a pitch that no one could of had reached.

And in what joni had quoted “And I thought Australia was not a racist country ??It is unfortunately alive and well here !!
It’s true, Australian people probably didn’t even like Kate, but see if a NZ born Samoan girl had one this, what would Australia look like? Where you have Kate from the bloody outback and hello, a person who constantly had something wrong with all her performances, she was at first accussed of sleeping with James, so ever since she started there was nothing but bad comebacks in regards to Kate.

Looks like this is going to turn out to be a Casey and Anthony Calea moment. Where Casey has now become a no one, while the runner up has become more of a celeb than the actual winner!! Really goes to show how bloody wrong Australians can really be, when it comes to voting for the right person.

    GO EMILY!! You go mate!

  19. Lets not all forget that what we are all to-ing and fro-ing about here is just a television programme designed to suck us all in and make us spend up BIG on voting and then hopefully on CD’s at the end of it all.
Kate won because the producers got everyone to believe it was closer than it was just to make us all vote harder.
All those crapass emotional cameos of Kate as the Aussie battler who tried, tried and then tried AGAIN.
It just made all the dumb Aussies vote all the more for the dumb blonde female Farnham reincarnate.
Any thinking and feeling person could plainly see that Emily was and is by far the best vocalist in this years idol.
Even Kate herself said only a few weeks before the finale “just get it over and give it to her”.
Emily and Lee were the only singers in this years idol to truly excite the audience.
You could feel it week by week. Their live audience response was by far the biggest and most enthusiastic.
I don’t think it matters that Kate won because she’ll always have a huge bogun following of white average middle and lower class Aussies.Theres always got to be the next Farnzie or Barnzie.
I think it was a clever move by the producers.
You give it to the Aussie bogun with the guaranteed number one hit and the following of the great white sea of non thinking suburban Oz.
And then the real talent gets a bit more time to make something really great for those of us that will appreciate it.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Kate as a performer is quite PLEASANT.
On the other hand EMILY has one of the most extraordinary voices I have ever heard.
She could just leave the band behind and go out on her own to somewhere way beyond Kate could ever dream of, and then return
    gently and passionately.
    Time will tell what happens.
Kate will make it in the “business” mainly due to her competitiveness and determination.
Whether Emily does or not doesn’t matter because her gift is within and she has already shared it with all of us.

  20. the only reason kate one is because of racism. I wanted Emily to win, but offcourse why would the Australian public want a kiwi to be crowned australian idol. Personally i don’t care as for all the morons out there who probably voted for the first time because it was the final, and voted for kate, congratualtions u just passed the opportunity to have one of the most amazing singers NOT represent our country. I mean look at who Kate’s up against “kelley Clarkson”, “Carrie underwood” and others she has no hope. Emily will do BETTER! in the long run.

  21. What are you lot on about, we now have a cabaret singer as the idle………(on purpose spelling)
We can look forward to a singer that does Frank Sinatra ok but not really sing any contemporary music well.
Emily will get a contract and do very well due to her superior talent however we look like a nation of racists for voting someone due to their hair colour, nationality and looks not their talent

    shame australia shame

  22. That stupid moron of a judge, who wouldn’t know talent, even if he slept with it. Carl is it,,,,,,,,,or Karl.
He sowed the seeds for Kate to win with his comment about her tuckshop arms.
    Dumb move shark boy.
Every time a controversial rermark was made by the judges this year about any contestant, they got voted back even stronger the following night.
Stupid white middle class suburban ozzies love nothing better than to champion the cause of the underdog, they wouldn’t know talent,,,,,,,,perhaps not in the same way as (C)Karlie, as most are so ugly that they never get to sleep with anybody. At least he is mildly attractive in that brand new puppy sort of way.
It would be interesting to see the breakdown of votes state to state.
My bet is that Kate won in NSW and Qld and Emily won in Victoria.
Next year judges, you should hold back on the personal attacks on the contestants then the real talent will get through without the sympathy voters.

  23. Emily rocks, she has talent and should have won. Regardless of her having a beautiful daughter (JM you dumb ass) Go emily!!!!!!!!

  24. For the second consecutive year, the finest singer in the competition has been beaten by a far lesser contestant.

Kate, like Casey, became a novelty because of her weight problems. But just because the Australian public identified with Kate’s “story” and was willing to vote to boost her self-esteem, does not mean that they will follow through by purchasing her CDs. I expect that, once the initial hype dissipates, Kate will gradually disappear. The same has happened to Casey – and Casey is a much better singer than Kate.

The difference in talent between Emily and Kate is, for me, even wider than the difference we saw between Anthony and Casey. Emily is arguably the best singer Australian Idol has ever seen. Kate’s voice is not distinctive at all and it lacks power. She was at OK when singing a slow ballad, but failed miserably every time she attempted a faster song. She rarely tried for a big note (something Emily did with incredible ease) and the few times she did I could hear a terrible scratchiness enter her voice. She is simply not in the same league as singers like Emily and Cosima.

Having said that, I was not surprised by the result. There was no way Kate’s family was ever going to let her lose. The amount of money they are rumoured to have spent is enormous. I think that is terrible for the competition.

Emily is the only reason I watched this third series. Before it began, I was concerned that they would be scraping the bottom of the barrell talent-wise. Aside from Emily and a few others, I think I was right. Certainly, the quality of next year’s series will be touch and go. I really hope there is someone like Emily out there, who, for whatever reason, has held off on auditioning.

  25. Alright…this is how it really is…
Emily, best singer of the 2005 idol competition. Kate, piece of sh*t voice, piece of sh*t look, piece of sh*t act. lee, shocking singer good entertainer…become a stripper or something, you’d get more money in that business mate. Yes thats right, kate is a bogan, coming from the bogan side of town, with bogan followers. I wouldn’t say it’s a racial issue because PLENTY of white australians have been voting for Emily every single week. Trevor was voted the winner of the 2004 series of big brother, and we give credit to many other non-australian born people. I only hope, as a Victorian myself, that just because Kate was born in bendigo, Victorians didn’t vote for that solitatary reason. she is a piece of trash and deserved no more than to get through the first round. Emily has spunk, a fatastic voice, and a fantastically interenting pirate feel about her. In the long run, not winning is the best thing that could have happened for her. She now does not have to release that shocking ‘ballad’ but rather her own unique material. I predict that Emily Williams will be a name Australians, and even the rest of the world remember for years to come as one of Australias best R&B/hip hop singers of the 21st centry. GOOD LUCK EMILY…best of luck to you….don’t be hung up on kate getting more 10 year old votes…you’re above that.

  26. I agree, Kate definitly has that scratchiness in her high notes, and thats why i wreckon she avoided them. U can tel that she tries to work around it but in the end she just cannot do it like Emily.

  27. kate kate kate.
i think the public has either a hearing problem and/or a vision distortion. KATE? It was a shock wasn’t it. You have to admit it. VEry true. Everyone was rooting for EMILY, but what happened? Pressed the wrong numbers on their phones? Blind as well i assume. Not that i have a thing against Kate, i think she’s a lovely girl, but i believe that Emily possessed the voice, the talent and the passion needed for success in the music industry. go emily! =P

  28. I think that emily didn’t win cos she’s not a typical “Aussie”…i noe this cos i read the aussie idol forums…

people dis emily and anne cos theyre kiwi!!! i mean…get a life people…we’re supposed to be a multicultural country

She rocks…why not give her a chance people….like Jim…the only reason i watched this season was cos of emily!!!

Emily will do so much better in the long run…

  29. Wow!!! Who would have thought people have so much to say about idol. Just change the channel or better still turn the television off! Oh but I do own both of Shannon’s albums:)

  30. Record sales will tell the real story….
Agree Emily should have won; real person with real humility and a real voice; plus three touchdowns. Nuff said.

  31. I think anybody who says Kate is abetter singer than emily is absolutle moronic, go Allistair, it’s soo true, everything you said. Why did Kate win? i have many answers. she is an “aussie Battler’ and somehow (God knows why) that got her votes, she’s had weight battle (who cares?) and she has been made fun of by Kyle (and people love to rebel against the judges!) but I truely was evastated when Andrew G said “Kate DeAraugo’ and we voted 70 times that’s like alot of money so I honestly think the Australian public are insane or the competition is rigged. I really do wish Emily could have won but if you thibk about it any Idol runner-up has actually done better than the inner. Look at the ARIA charts who’s on there? Not Guy and Casey, Anthony and Sannon are so I hope this tradition continues because Emily is better fullstop, she will bet a recording deal and do well but I’m still annoued she didn’t win!!! Thanks for letting me have my say! PS- Anybody who doesn’t like either Emily or Kate or is just posting stupid comments, bugger off this isn’t a mess-around site!

  32. Lets try to keep some perspective on this. There is no dout that Emily has a fantastic voice or that she can move on the stage. Its true that she received 3 touchdowns and would have got a forth if judge Mark Holden got his way but as much as Holden would like you to think she is the best of the best, she is not. Emily has mimimal power in her lower register and very little control when singing in the same. This flaw was repeatedly obvious over the final three weeks of the show. Take her out of her screaming upper register and she lost it. Kate however continued to grow throughout the competition. when you consider that the only offkey notes you heard from Kate was at the top of her register when she could only just talk. When you look at the constent level of power that she could deliver throughout her entire range, then you might be able to see past the Mark Holden web of illusion and admit she really was the better singer. Which brings me to my next point. Was there ever anyone on the stage except Emily and Dan as far as Mark was concerned. His totally biased and one sided judgments were a disgrace. In his eyes they were the only one’s but I do believe he did Emily more harm than good. Could it be possible that the voting public was swayed by the bias judging. Kate could do no right in Marks opinion. If Dan England can stand stock still in the middle of the stage and be told how great he was then how could Kate could do the same thing but get canned for it by Mark. I believe that if you are honest, and look back at the performances over the last three weeks of the competition, Kate was without a dout, the most consistent. Then to top it all off, look at the personalities of the final two along with their interview skills and the compitition then becomes one sided favouring Kate. Kate DeAraugo is the total package and In my opinion deserved to win by a much bigger margin than the media claim that she did

  33. Emily will make it in the Music Industry if she employs the right management to further inhance her career. At the end of the day, whether Emily won or not, her name is well known in Aussie now – good or bad!! That’s even calling her manly looking, or putting her down as being a Mum, let alone a forklift operator. It doesn’t matter now cos this has opened the door for all the Music Producers to take this extraordinary “samoan” (now adopted aussie) to another level in her career. She so deserves it!! To sing any Whitney song, you either have to match it or better it which Emily delivered every time. You wait till you hear her older sister!! She’s just as amazing as Emily. It would’ve been awesome if they did a duet together on Australian Idol cos I think you will know the true extent of how much these natural born singers are so gifted and talented!!

NZ has just crowned their own Idol (samoan as well and probably the same size as Casey was) and she was critisized for it too. However, she was the better singer out of the competition as to why Rosita won. Emily thought bigger than that and moved to Aussie as there is more career opportunities over there “Idol Wise” then it is in NZ.

Whether the public voted for Kate, it is in her stride now to take her own style of music to make No.1 songs.

  34. Re my comments above??? I am based in NZ and have watched both series with Guy and Casey, but it was not broadcasted this time. We had the last two, but they did not show this one!! Sometimes its so typical even here in NZ, maybe cos just when NZ Idol finished here, Aussie Idol was at least a month ahead.

As a “samoan kiwi”, embrace Emily cos no opportunities was available here. I tell ya, if Emily was in NZ Idol, she would’ve of won it over Rosita. It would’ve been the “Clash of the SAMOANS”.

If Emily makes it big in Aussie, can you only just hear the Kiwis trying to claim her????? Too late!!!
Emily is now an adopted Aussie!!! Hahahahahaha!!

  35. I can’t believe all of you people saying Kate is awful why did she win? Maybe if you had voted as much as you bag Kate she would have won by a mile.

Kate won because she has the overall package Emily is a great signer but like casey donovan she is shy and not as well spoken

Kate didnt chose what the producers put on the show and believe me it wasnt to make Kate the favourite.

Kate will do really well because of her voice, her style and her media skill, emily might do ok too but like on ROVE LIVE im sure she will put her foot in it at one stage and loose many sales because of it.

Well Done Kate you really are much more of an Idol to be inspired by

  36. LOL typical, Bash the winner and praise the loser, your showing your an Emily supporter and good on you! American idol, Big Brother’s whatever show that chooses the winner solely phone votes isn’t decided on JUST an ability to sing, to think it does shows the lack of intelligence.

If it was a ‘real’ judging competition then only the Judges decide, however Idol is not won that way but, by the public who (assumingly) are the ones who will buy the records in the future.

Does it matter in the long run who won, as I feel we will hear from both in the near future. Past history seems to be with Aussie Idol winners that the runner up seems to be whom we hear more of EG, Shannon Noll and Anthony, so all you Emily supporters your true loyality is yet to be shown by buying her albums.

Winning Idol doesn’t make Kate a superstar, it is only a leg up into the industry, the hard slog is yet to come. Agree or disagree with the outcome, this years idol shows that Australia has some fantastic and talented people of whom all we should be proud and supportive off. Remember Idol is a 3 month show, I am sure Johhny Farnham, AC/DC, Midnight Oil, Marcia Hines, Mark Holden Etc etc etc didn’t become as great as they are in 3 months, but over time and hard work and a little thing called experience.

So get off your soapboxes and get down to the local record shop and BUY the CD of your favourite Aussie Artist! That is truely THE only vote that counts, putting our money where your mouth is!

  37. You people need a reality check. Kate is the first typical anglo-saxon to win Oz Idol in three seasons. Casey is indigenous and I don’t even know what the Fro is but typical anglo he’s not. I’m a wog and I voted Kate because she worked consistently hard, handled over-the-top and out of line criticisms with grace and did not try to push anyone’s emotional buttons ala Emily. She just went out there and did her best every week.

Yes Emily has a great soprano voice but towards the end I found her performances heavily contrived and thought she was too focused on trying to reach the high notes and get touch downs rather than just tell a story and sing a good song. Kate has a great voice with lovely dulcet tones that draws people in. Its not as dramatic as Emily’s voice but then how boring would it be if every pop singer sounded like Beyonce and Whitney Huston.

Get over it people. Race has NOTHING to do with it.

  38. Emily might sing well but the screeching was just getting unbearable. She can’t sing in the lower keys, she can only sing in a soprano voice. I actually had to mute the TV during such performances as “I can’t help falling in love with you” during Elvis theme show and “I’m every woman” at the grand finale. Kate won because she worked hard and because at the end of the day her voice was way more soothing to the human ear than Emily’s. This being said, I’m sure Emily will get a record deal and she will do very well.

  39. HA HA HA HA HA . OKAY. Emily was BY FARRR the better singer. BY FAR BY FAR BY FAR. KATE won cos shes some bogan from bendigo, meaning, YES PEOPLE, everyone from Bendigo voted for her. Emily has an AMAZING voice.
But i think overall its a good thing she didnt win. otherwise shed have to make a GAY first song (a “ballad”, that really isn’t a ballad), a first CD that is total crap, and she wouldnt have a say in her music. instead, she can show us her own style.
PS KYLE IS A FUCKING IDIOT!

  40. Emily technically was a superior singer to Kate….. not perfect just superior. This is really not open to debate. Replay all of Emily’s performances. Her musicianship easily matches Guy sebastian’s placing her well above any of this years Idol’s wannebees. Evidence of this are also found in the 3 touchdowns. Replay Emily’s whitney houston effort….Possibly the best performance of any contender this year.

    Hears the Rub……

Centerbet had Emily at odds on favourite at $1.35 and Kate an outside chance at $3.15. Alot of money was on Emily perhaps millions….
The voting was quite possibly rigged to award Kate the Gong, hence earn the RIGGERS the higher payout….
VOTING SHOULD BE SET UP ONE MOBILE OR PHONE ONE VOTE ONLY

  41. I couldnt believe that Emily didnt win but in a way I expected it.

I think emily was truely a standout. I think that when people found out that Kate had been trying so hard they felt sorry for this overweight, depressed, bogan who kept trying and trying and just couldnt get that touchdown and just couldnt resist voting for her. Although she was good she was not good enough compared to Emily. People just need to realise that the stand out performer should be rewarded as oppose to giving useless pitty votes. Everyone tries hard u just need to realise that some people just aint good enough and shouldnt be rewarded with a title that they dont deserve, dont get me wrong she is a good singer.
The clearly BETTER performer (Emily) should have taken the crown as oppose to this confused bogan (Kate)
In the long run Kate will not be able to handle the pressures of being a recording artist, this is evident when she almost had a breakdown during the idol series (those who watch idol extra know what im talkin about)

I was a fan of Kate AND Emily in the early stages of the series but to be honest overtime the true colours of who was the better performer was clear. Those who claim Emily is a screecher clearly dont like Whitney Houseton, Aretha Franklin, Destiny’s Child, Mariah Carey as well as many others and are missing out
I have actually downloaded Emily’s staged idol performances from a program that shall remain nameless and I could tell u now she never sings an off beat tune (she hits the notes whether they are low or high and trust me they dont sound like screeches). I do however admit that nerves many have taken over during her emotions and since uve been gone performance which may hav lost it for her, for that same night however Kate although good performances they just sounded repetitttive and dull like the previous two weeks I saw myself leaving the room just to make the song move faster. she can only sing one style whereas Emily can bounce from pop, rnb, rock, u name it, and she performs. What mattered the most was the single the idol would release and it is even easier to compare singers when they sing the same song and Emily clearly outdid Kate. Com’on people how much clearer does it need to be (by the way I hav the Emily version of the new single and its great just waiting for the next one). Kate is a one hit wonder Emily will last for years.
Also, at times I couldnt bare watching kates performances, I got turned off with the way she held and expressed herself (the wild mouth and the shoulder shrugging).
During the end of the series it was obvious that kate was trying to gain pitty by mentioning depression and longlasting weight problems (what better way to compete against Emily’s childhood poverty) from the public and just seems dull (i mean shes not the only overweight person to rise to fame! And to claim that she was helping other overweight followers by winning idol really annoyed me because it was just a statement its not like she was gonna become a fitness instructor) Its likely that she will follow in the bad example of the anorexic fad that most celebrities take up.. who knows how far determination will take you…(everyone KNOWS KATE is a HARD WORKER)… but only time will tell

    Good Luck Emily

Just though I’d hav my say
    cheers

  42. VK,

What the hell does Kate being an anglo-saxon have to do with her right to win Idol? Last time I checked, we lived in Australia – a beautiful multi-cultural country. Pull your head in.

    Al.

  43. I have always gone for Kate and i will forever because she can sing and that is no offence to the fans of emily but i have to say good on you kate for winning Australian Idol and i was glad that i was there to actually see it live! I have even baught Kate’s single today aswell!

From Kate’s no 1 FAN CRYSTAL

  44. I was happy for either idol to win. But, Emily a “screecher?” — how much of the series did you actually watch? Fools. She got three touchdowns for a reason! Noobs that tune in on the last episode think they have the right to talk smack.

  45. When you look at the meaning of the word ‘Idol’ and it’s use in this contest it is evidenced as an appropriate choice. Idol in this sense means an icon, symbol or emblem. The essential ingredient, which is missing from the title of the show, is a word that indicates, ‘talent’. There in itself is the flaw; the produces have reinvented an old concept without giving due credit to the fundamental basis of an entertainment show which is why the show continues to exist at all. How can a truly talented class act be credited correctly by a mass of individuals who can’t recognise it, understand it and are also confused by their allegiance or their need to be associated with one contestant. No wonder so many with discerning taste ignore Australian Idol as it is purely a popularity competition with a large percentage of the actual voters identifying with their favourite, voting with their emotions or voting via peer pressure. This in itself undermines the whole nature of competition based loosely on talent and gives lip service only to the actual inclusion of the most important element. Now for the emotional stuff: The producers are laughing all the way to the bank, because they have given you and I reason to become emotional. These reality TV shows are engineered to produce controversy. Some of you are upset, some are happy – the producers are rich. If the competition were based on talent I believe based on comments made by those who do know, namely ‘sit on the fence’ Marcia Hynes and ‘Touch down’ Mark Holden, who have actually sold records and have been in the industry since they were babies. The true finalists should have been Anne and Emily (I hasten to add I never bought one of the former two’s recordings). I can only hope everyone will just forget Kyle and dismiss him as the typical know nothing unimportant overly opinionated foul mouthed radio jock. If you look at the three years of Idol, you will have seen many good singers coming from all over Oz. I underline ‘Good’. Because, There are ‘lots’ of ‘good’ singers – they are everywhere. But class stands out like a Rottweiler at a Poodle party and the class act you all saw and heard during Idol 2005 will prove to be: – A stayer and will deliver quality innovative outstanding music which will prove to contribute to Australia’s ever growing list of phenomenal talent in a manner that will be astonishing and legendary for this country – if – that person has the stamina and the best marketing advice. In my unemotional view that person – I hope – will be Emily Williams. I hope she is glad, as I am that she lives in Oz.

  46. look ppl EMILY IS GREAT AND SHE SHOULVE WON
kate can go to hell i wanted Emily to win because she connects with the songs and i can feel it… she gives me tears when she sing and it doesnt happen all the time to me.. if you ppl judge by the way they look how pathetic should you be?
